Oh yeah, they don't have a clue how to run a message board...
10 Comments:
Sounds awesome, and when I clicked on a few of the links, it looks like a great place. But, once bitten twice shy. I'm through with online debating for now ;)
CA is way too big. It is extrmely difficult to get a handle on topics of interest.
I used think that the CA Message board wasn't a great board, but you can't really argue with the results. Look at that... 22,000 members, 600,00 articles! Wow...
I still don't like some of their "restrictiveness" (no sede talk whatsoever, etc..) but after having seen what I have, I can't really blame them now.
Probably the only reason I haven't frequented their board is because I just haven't gotten the same feeling that I got from my former board. I think that's really only because it's too big.
I found it too big for my taste. A topic could be posted, and ten minutes later it'd have 100 posts and have been hijacked three or four times. Good I suppose for getting answers, but not so fun for those of us who like things to be a bit more individual.
I was just reading some of the threads about the TLM and now I want to block the CA forums at my firewall (like I've already done with DCF)!
Too, the larger the message board, the more likely one will see extremes of behavior.
I agree with you, David. (regarding the TLM thread linked)..
..
I've read the message board at CA a few times since it opened. It's just never captivated my attention for very long. I did notice the last time I was there a few weeks ago that the home page looks much more attractive with less clutter. Less overwhelming. But, with 22,000 members, how do you get to know anyone? How can you watch new converts grow, or protestants convert? The size just feels way too impersonal, but I guess that works for a lot of people.
Plus the forums are dog-slow. I guess that's the price you pay for being successful. ;-)
I do know that these forums were awesome during the Terri Schiavo case. I went on there several times asking for help. The people there were immediatly responsive and even passed the messages on. They were so awesome and helped out alot. Thanks to ALL on the CA message boards who took time out to help out and take action for Ms. Schiavo.
I personally thought that CA was to big to keep up with. I visit on rare occasions.
FYI, I met a guy who has a Catholic forum that doesn't get much traffic
http://forum.catholicboard.com
You might want to plant there. Just a thought ...
