REAL Reality TV

Reality TV in monastery changes five lives forever
Non nobis Domine, non nobis, sed Nomini Tuo da gloriam.
(and no, we're not Knights Templar out to protect the Sangreal and restore the Sacred Feminine, in case you're wondering)

Yeah, I saw that somewhere earlier today. Almost makes me change my opinion of reality TV. It's cool that they had an atheist come to faith.
I must admit that my wife and I are hooked on "Supernanny."
Wow, that is so awesome!
Hey, LJD, try Nanny 911 instead...much better. :-) hehe.
Wow! Why do we waste so much $$$ on therapists. All most people really need is to spend some time in deep prayer...and probably a spiritual director. I am a personal testiment to that fact, as well, btw.
Oh, and I prefer Nanny 911, too. Did anyone see the previews for next week? 3 nannies and a family with 23 children, most special needs. Now THAT I've got to see.
You know what's really ironic: reality TV shows are ridculously unrealistic. Most "unreality" TV shows are attempting to create some semblance of reality, whether the emergency room in ER, crime investigations in any number of shows, etc. But these "reality TV" shows, with the notable exception of the one you linked to, put real people in unreal situations, rather than putting actors in real ones. It's inane, but it's incredibly addictive...
Fang,
You are soooo right about that. They are in actuality the least portrayal of true reality.
Take Nanny 911 for example.
I have noticed that all the families they help..are upper class white families. Maybe not all of the shows have been like that but the ones I have seen are.
They have really nice houses..beautiful cars...work at home...tons of money...lol...I would LOVE to see one of these Nanny's come to my house! Hehe...the Nanny on last night freaked out because the two boys shared a room! Haha...I have two boys sleeping in the living room..one on the couch...baby sleeps with me...Mil and Fil in the other room...very small two bedroom house and no matter how we try the roaches always get back in!! Hahahaha...they would turn around and run! Oh, I almost forgot..dont forget the two dogs and the new kitten!

Very true. The people are real but the situations into which they are placed are unreal, or perhaps surreal. I remember way back when I used to watch MTV's "The Real World" taking note of the fact that virtually every season's cast included a token homosexual. Most people will probably live their entire lives without ever sharing a house with a homosexual.
Re: "Nanny 911" - We used to watch this one, but after it went on hiatus we forgot about it and never remember when it's on. Plus our kiddies don't go to bed until 9:30 or so and we don't want them getting any behavioral hints from the families featured on the show.
I allowed my kids to watch one episode of one of the Nanny shows a few weeks ago. The little boy on that episode was allowed to go outside to pee in the bushes. My kids (8&5) were shocked! They kept asking me why he did that. I replied that the parents allowed it to happen. They also were very astute towards the parents behavior. The parents were fighting the Nanny every step of the way. They kept asking me why they would call for help and then not listen. I agreed that that didn't make any sense at all. I don't think I'd let them watch the show on a regular basis, for the very same reason you state, but it was interesting to see their responses on this one episode. lol
Oh, and Jeni, I was just saying the same thing to my husband last night about the affluence of the families. Either they only take on families that can afford to put up the Nanny, or people with money have more problems raising kids than people without.
There are a lot of pitfalls for the wealthy, to be sure.
But I don't live in a wealthy area and I see the same sort of behavior in the neighborhood children as I've seen on the "Nanny" shows. Parents seem to be very permissive with their children these days.
